Our Spanish Family

Nuestra Familia de Espana

In 1975, Terry, Teri and 4-year-old Tami were lucky enough to be stationed at the Rota Naval Air Station in Spain.
Wanting to get the most out of the experience, we chose to live off base so we could meet the people of the country. We chose Puerto de Santa Maria instead of living right outside of the base in Rota and we wanted to get a little further away from the base's influence. It was one of the best choices we ever made!
En 1975, Terry, Teri y nuestra hija de 4 años Tami fuimos muy afortunados cuando nos destinaron a la base naval de Rota en España. Con el fin de sacar el máximo rendimiento de la experiencia, decidimos vivir fuera de la base para de esa forma integrarnos mejor en el país. Elegimos El Puerto de Santa María en vez quedarnos en las afueras de la base para así alejarnos un poco de su influencia. Fue una de las mejores elecciones de nuestra vida

Pepe, Pepillo, Lola and Isabel Belen and Julia

We moved into a little place near the Bodegas Terry in Puerto, around the corner was a little market and there we met some wonderful new friends.
Pepi and Loli were the owners of that market. At the time they had 6 children: Isabel, Ana, Mari Loli, Kiko, Mari Carmen and Virginia. To help Tami fit in with the other children and learn the language faster, we enrolled her into school with Virginia. Another good choice!

Nos mudamos a un pequeño lugar cerca de las Bodegas Terry en El Puerto, en la esquina había un pequeña tienda y allí fue donde conocimos a unos amigos maravillosos. Pepi y Loli eran los propietarios de la tienda. Por aquel entonces tenían 6 hijos: Isabel, Ana, Mari Loli, Kiko, Mari Carmen y Virginia. Para ayudar a Tami en su integración con los otros niños y para aprender el español más rápido, la matriculamos en la escuela con Virginia. Otra buena elección!

I can remember when Belen was born. It was Christmas Eve, 1976. We had the family down at our house. Someplace about 11 p.m., Loli decided that it was time to go home. She felt a little uncomfortable. Christmas morning had brought another daughter, our God-daughter, Maria Belen. After Belen, Jaime and Julia were added for a total of 9 children. Now there are two spouses and a total of 4 grandchildren.

Aún puedo recordar cuando Belen nació. Fue en la Noche Buena de 1976. Habiamos invitado a la familia a cenar a nuestra casa. Alrededor de las 11 de la noche, Loli decidió que era hora de irse a casa, se sentía un poco incómoda. La mañana de Navidad trajo a otra hija, nuestra ahijada, María Belén. Después de Belén, llegaron Jaime y Julia, un total de 9 hijos. Ahora hay dos casados y 4 nietos.

When we left in June of 1978, we left with a 6 ½ year old daughter who was so fluent in Spanish that she had no American accent and a new daughter, Tori, born on the base at Rota. We had made some wonderful friendships, which still continue 23 years later. We also left with an enduring love for the Spanish people and their country!

Cuando dejamos El Puerto en junio de 1978, nos marchamos con una hija de 6 años y medio que hablaba español sin ningún acento americano y otra hija, Tori, que nació en la base de Rota. Hicimos unas amistades maravillosas, que todavía continúan 23 años después. También nos fuimos sintiendo un gran amor hacia los españoles y su país!
